Donald Trump, infantile thug that he is, cannot stop himself from crowing about the big Republican victory that brought the government back to life. According to his Tuesday tweet:
Big win for Republicans as Democrats cave on Shutdown.
Now it's time for the Dems to thank Trump for his honesty and motivation:
Thank you, sir, for pointing out our faults. You're right. In the negotiations for funding the government, we absolutely caved. You guys won. You got (as budget chief Mick Mulvaney says) "exactly what we wanted." So now it's time for us to take stock of our position and make the necessary adjustment. Exquisite leader that you are, you've instilled in us the courage to stand by our convictions. It's time to grow a backbone! Rest assured, sir, your heart-felt message will not be lost on us. Next time you need help from the Democrats to fund this country, WE WILL NOT CAVE. That's our guarantee to you! We will refuse to re-open this government until you resign the Presidency. Thank you so much for putting us on the right course. All the credit accrues to you!
The Democrats would have to put DACA aside for the time being. (Mitch McConnell only promised to bring an immigration bill to the floor if the government remained open after stopgap funding ended.) But even with Trump gone, things could still get messy. Who knows what Mike Pence would do?
Or Paul Ryan, when his turn came?
The Democrats might have to keep the government shut down until they get someone in the Oval Office who can negotiate in good faith.
Is that even possible?
